Via the Dismal Swamp, which wasn't so dismal after all. It's a man-made intracoastal waterway, about 63 miles long and about 6ft deep. It is very narrow and very protected. It was so different from what we've been experiencing that it was indeed a welcome change!
Leaving Norfolk. We must have counted 50 warships, with several patrol boats guarding them with 50 cals on their bows. It was insane. Couldn't wait to leave.
Waiting at the first lock to enter The Dismal Swamp.
What are the chances this place is haunted? 100%.
At the moment we are rafted up to the wall of the final lock of The Dismal Swamp. We put in 40 nautical miles today. We weren't expecting to put in such a big day, it just sort of happened. Tomorrow we are heading to Elizabeth City, where will wait out the cold front before we cross the Albemarle Sound.
