Early morning departure.
Yesterday was a bit of a roller coaster. We were debating whether or not to just sail into Deltaville, 25 nautical miles, or try and make it the additional 35 to Norfolk, for a total of 60 nautical miles. We were both leaning towards Norfolk, reason being those ridiculous cold fronts that are coming our way. We wanted to get out of the bay before she kicked asses. Plus if we had to stop in Deltaville we would have to hide out there until at least next Tuesday, which wasn't appealing to us.
However, we were a little hesitant to go this route because it meant we would be arriving after dark. We have never navigated at night before and were a bit reluctant to have our first time be into the hugest military base in the world and arguably the busiest harbour in North America. The guide book told us to keep a lookout for submarines, aircraft carriers and battleships. Sweet.
Anyways, we left at 6:30am and made it to Deltaville in really good time and by our calculation, if the wind kept our speed up, we would be able to make it to Norfolk just before dark. So we decided to go for it. About an hour past Deltaville the weather picked up out of nowhere, our speed started to slow, and we made a rash decision to alter course and head back to Deltaville, but we could tell this wasn't the right decision, sometimes you can just feel it in your gut. So we turned around again and were determined to make it to Norfolk. Which we did. Not before dark like we had hoped and it was intimidating to say the least.
We docked at 6:30pm last night. Yes, a dock. We treated ourselves to a Marina with hot showers , a laundromat and a cute little restaurant. Feeling quite refreshed this morning. We are taking off shortly. Our destination? The Dismal Swamp. Sounds appealing doesn't it?
